Göhren is located at the eastern coast of the island of Rügen.

At present the only sport boat harbour at the eastern coast of Rügen is 
Sassnitz in the north.
The nearest harbours in the Greifswalder Bodden area are Lauterbach at the 
southern shores of the island, Stralsund, Greifswald and Wolgast at the 
mainland and the small emergency harbour on the island Greifswalder Oie.
A boat harbour at Göhren, by reducing the distance between existing har-
bours, would be an important contribution to improve the attractiveness of 
this sailing area and the safety for boat tourists.
This would not only support sailing within the region, but also cross-border 
boat tourists on their way from or to Poland, Bornholm or Sweden. For these 
tourists it is difficult to reach the Greifswalder Bodden within a day trip,
particularly in view of difficult navigation conditions and various protected
fishery zones.

Göhren has two main beach areas. The beach in the north is a high quality 
area for tourists with good tourist infrastructure including a promenade and a 
pier as well as health facilities.
In contrast, the southern part is not attractively structured, containing a sport field, museum, residential buildings, landing place for fisher boats
and artisanal fish processing.

- The connection of the southern beach area to the urban centre needs 
  improvement
- The smokery and the landing place for fisher boats are poorly used
- The planning area is part of the nature protection zone, class III, of the 
  Biosphere reserve "Südost Rügen" and has therefore to respect protec-
  tion conditions for such areas.

- Create conditions for the construction of a harbour for about 120 sport 
  boats and about 20 fishing boats
- Upgrading of the southern beach area of Göhren, including its connec-
  tion to the urban centre.

The planned harbour would help to secure jobs for about 40 fishers. Addi-
tional 20 jobs would be created due to the increasing number of tourists.
The estimated total amount of the investment is about 10 million EURO.
The new harbour provides conditions for a sustainable development of the 
area, compatibilising the needs for economic development with those of 
nature protection.
